Are you a Latino and living in Virginia?

You are invited to participate in an interview connected to the Latino Virginia Oral History Project. Together, we can build a legacy that honors and shares the voices of Latinos across the state.

How to Participate

logoGetting involved is simple. Share your story in a one-on-one interview, conducted either in person or virtually. Interviews typically last 1–2 hours, and your time and efforts will be appreciated with a $50 compensation.

  • Participation will take about 1-2 hours.
  • You will complete a demographic form and then be interviewed about your life and experiences in Virginia.
  • With your permission, we will record the interview and will also ask to take a photograph.
  • Your participation is voluntary. Your decision will not affect your ability to receive services from any organization that may have connected you with the study.

  • In appreciation for your time and for sharing your story with us, you will receive a $50 gift card upon completion of the interview.
  • Once we’ve conducted and transcribed all interviews, you will also receive: a copy of the audio recording, a copy of the transcript, and copies of any photographs taken.

  • There are no individual benefits to participating in the study, but this is an opportunity to share your experience and help the larger community have a better understanding of Latinos in Virginia.
  • You have the right to skip any question you wish, end participation in the interview at any time, request to complete the interview at another time, and/or withdraw from the project at any time.

  • In addition to participating in the research study, you can opt-in to sharing your story in
    a digital archive on the Latino Virginia website. This archive will include the audio recordings (or parts) of the interviews, the transcripts, and some photographs.
  • You may choose to use your real name in the archive or a pseudonym if you prefer to
    remain anonymous. Alternatively, you may also request that the interview remain private and used only for research purposes.

  • The Latino Virginia Digital Archive will collect oral history interviews with Latino residents of Virginia to chronicle and preserve their migration history, successes, challenges, and contributions.
  • There are other similar digital archives of Latino stories in Harrisonburg, North Carolina and Rhode Island.
